J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle and Beef Breeding, Thursday 16th October 2025

STORE CATTLE
A buzzing ring and buoyant trade all round.

A real buzz in the air today at Junction 36 with buyers and sellers turning out in force for another cracking sale of Store Cattle.
Shorthorn bullocks topped at £2280 for a pen of 3 at 19m old from Messrs I & AJ Armer. Charolais bullocks peaked at £2220 from EW & RM Towers. British Blue bullocks sold to £2120 from Messrs J Holme & Son. The same good farm had British Blue heifers to £2260 and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £2160. Charolais heifers sold to £2080 for a cracker at 17m old from Messrs S Robinson.

Bulls also sold very well, topping at £2300 twice for 11m old Aberdeen Angus from Messrs TW Gorst.

CALVES
107 calves forward and more new faces giving J36 a go with their calves.

Bull calves were a nice trade selling to £850 for British Blue from J & B Morley, Appleby. Younger British Blue to £660 for 30 day olds from HJ Robinson, Elm Tree with others to £610 at the same age from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. Hereford bulls sold to £680 from JS & IM Wlson, Monk Foss with Charolais and Aberdeen Angus to £660 from SW & K Metcalfe, Whittington. Shorthorns sold to £620 for first time vendor RF & CE Hodgson, Ulverston who sold Fleckvieh at £600 and Black and Whites to £450.

Heifer calves sold to £750 for British Blues from JS & IM Wilson, Monk Foss with other British Blues to £680 and Aberdeen Angus to £630 from J&B Morley, Appleby. Herefords sold to £590 from JS & IM Wilson with younger Charolais to £580 from C Dean & W Brennand, Clapham. Limousins sold to £540 for 30 day olds from R & JE Wharton, Appleby or £500 for 30 day old British Blue from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg.

STIRKS
There was plenty of interest in stirks with more required each sale to fulfil orders.

Steers sold to £1400 for Aberdeen Angus x from Mason, Birkland Barrow with well reared British Blue x (8 month old) £1280 from M Ellison, other continentals £980 - £1200 and natives £900 - £1100. Younger steers sold to £840 for 5 month old Aberdeen Angus x, dairy steers sold to £900 for 6 month old Black and Whites with others £780 - £850.
Heifers sold to £1040 for 9 month old British Blue x with others £850 - £940. Belted Galloways sold to £780. Just a handful of bull stirks were forward selling to £1280 for 7 month old British Blue x and Limousin x with others £1180 - £1250.

CAST COWS
Another sale with pens full and buyers keen to secure all classes and types.

Beef cows sold to 305p/kg for a Beef Shorthorn with other better end 280p/kg – 25p/kg. Top grossing was £2338 for an Aberdeen Angus x from JT Procter.
Best dairy cows sold to 289p/kg from Jenkin Crag Farms, medium types 250p/kg – 275p/kg and leaner parlour types 210p/kg – 230p/kg. Top grossing was £2109 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack.

OTM heifers sold to 309p/kg and £1346 for feeding types. Aberdeen Angus x with dairy heifers selling to 234p/kg and £1310.

Several cull stock bulls sold to a top of 250p/kg and £2587.

BEEF BREEDING

The special Autumn sale of beef breeding cattle was greeted with a packed ringside of bidders keen to secure additional and replacement stock. The sale commenced with breeding bulls, selling 6 month old Aberdeen Angus from TW Gorst at £3000 and a Charolais bull from JLP Roberts at £2300.

A dispersal of in-calf cows due to the Aberdeen Angus in Spring from JE & BR Booker were keenly bid for selling Hereford x cows to £2250 with others generally £1800 - £2100 and next draw down £1500 - £1750.

A feature of today’s sale was the dispersal of Hereford x Aberdeen Angus cows with Spring born Aberdeen Angus x calves from J & J Beary Farming Ltd. Those with bull calves sold to £3000, £2950, £2900 and £2800, with heifer calves £2800, £2700, £2650. The sale saw 56 outfits sold to average £2554.

The collective sale of Beef Breeding cattle saw AF & BA Dawson sell a Charolais x heifer with Aberdeen Angus x calf achieve £2800, British Blue x heifers with Aberdeen Angus x calves sold to £2350 from RW Ewan, with other older cows with Spring born calves generally £1900 - £2400.
